To celebrate the end of mental health awareness month, we shared our favorite therapists on Instagram. These therapists offer helpful advice that’s applicable all year round, so we wanted to recap the themes and profiles here.

Meet the Therapists:

Lauren Fogel Mersy, PsyD, LP

Dr. Fogel Mersy, a Doctor of Psychology and sex therapist who specializes in, you guessed it, sex and relationship therapy. Check out her page if you’re looking to understand better relationship dynamics, sexual dynamics, and how familial and past relationships influence your relationships now.

Alison Seponara, MS, LPC

Alison is a licensed professional counselor who specializes in working with patients with anxiety. As a cognitive-behavioral therapist, she creates specific plans of action to address the anxious feelings. Follow her if you’re looking for specific tips on anxiety management.

Ashley McGirt, MSW, LCSW

Ashley is a licensed social worker who specializes in trauma-informed work, particularly racial trauma, with a focus on the black experience in America. In addition to Instagram, she has a Tedx talk, podcast, and she writes! No end to the fantastic content on her page.

Jordan Green, LPC

Jordan is a licensed professional counselor who specializes in relationship therapy, particularly partnerships and familial relationships. If you’re experiencing or processing abusive or unhealthy relationship dynamics, her page is a must follow.

Sharmin Akhter, LCSW

Sharmin is a licensed clinical social worker. Her page focuses on wellness and understanding family dynamics. We think her content is particularly helpful if you are working through familial acceptance.

Top Themes:

  • Familial dynamics continue to affect us as we grow up. Many of our users report that they are processing these themes in their therapy now.
  • Familial and societal dynamics play out differently for people of color, and it’s essential to have a therapist cognizant of that.
  • Through our relationships, we get a greater understanding of ourselves.
  • Instagram is fantastic but not a therapy replacement — our top response from people this week was their excitement to bring the ideas shared into their discussions. Advice on Instagram tends to be more general; it can be a great compliment but not a substitute for therapy.

Next week we’ll be sharing a guide to kickstarting your therapist search — follow us on insta and subscribe here to get updates!
